(CNN) -- Two female cadets were injured -- one critically -- by a lightning strike Tuesday near the north side of the Fort Knox Army post.

The cadets were in training in the Muldraugh area about 3 p.m. ET when one of the cadets took a direct strike from a lightning bolt, said Anne Trophy, a Fort Knox media relations officer.

That cadet was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Trophy said the other cadet was struck by lightning and suffered serious injuries due to her proximity to the first cadet. She remains in stable condition.

Neither of the cadets' names was released.
