(CNN) -- Two firefighters in Bridgeport, Connecticut, were killed Saturday while fighting a house fire, the mayor's office said.

Lt. Steven Velasquez was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Medical Center and firefighter Michel Baik was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital, according to a statement Saturday night. Velasquez was promoted to lieutenant in February and Baik had been a firefighter for only two years.

"Bridgeport is mourning the loss of two of its bravest," Mayor Bill Finch said in a statement. "I urge you all to pray for the firefighters and their families during this most trying time."

Flags will fly at half-staff in the city to honor the men.

The cause of the fire, which was fought by several units, will be investigated by the state Fire Marshal's office.

Fire Captain Ed McCann told CNN affiliate WTNH that at least three other firefighters were treated at area hospitals for their injuries and released.

The fire occurred shortly after 5 p.m., Ficarra said.
