(CNN) -- One person survived and four remained missing after a small plane crashed in Lake Michigan on Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The incident happened near Ludington, Michigan, in the northwestern part of the lower peninsula, south of Traverse City.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Sam Meintes said there were five people on board and a Coast Guard boat and helicopter were taking part in the search for those still missing. The survivor was alert and conscious when transported to the shore, Meintes said.
Members of the Oceana County and Mason County sheriff's departments were also at the scene.
Officials did not immediately know the flight's place of origin. The incident, which occurred at 10:17 a.m., was reported by witnesses aboard a fishing vessel.
