(CNN) -- Two people were killed when a small plane crashed in Portland, Maine, after takeoff Saturday afternoon, airport officials said.
The Yak 52 Russian-built trainer aircraft crashed shortly before 3:30 p.m. on a street off airport property, said Paul Bradbury, director of Portland International Jetport.
No one on the ground was hurt, he said. The identities of the victims were not known Saturday evening.
The National Transportation Safety Board will be on the scene Sunday.
The cause of the crash was not known. Bradbury said skies had "reasonable visibility" at the time.
He said the plane operated regularly at the airport.
