Plane wreckage found in Gulf of coast of Florida panhandle

(CNN) -- The wreckage of a plane that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico Friday afternoon has been located by Florida officials.

Divers are attempting to reach the wreckage, which is resting on the sea bottom about three-quarters of a mile off the coast of the Okaloosa-Walton county line, in the Florida panhandle, officials said.

Two people were on board, but their status was uncertain, said Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The cause of the crash was unknown.
