(CNN) -- A U.S. Army reservist died after being shot by a fellow soldier at an Army Reserve Center south of Atlanta on Thursday, a spokesman at the post told CNN.

The victim died of multiple gun shot wounds, said Fort Gillem spokesman Peter Chadwick said. The shooter surrendered to police in nearby Lake City, Georgia, according to Chadwick.

The reserve center is adjacent to Fort Gillem in Forest Park, Georgia. The post is a satellite installation of Fort McPherson in nearby East Point.

When asked what the soldiers were doing on the center grounds, Chadwick said the reserve has a staff working throughout the week. The reservists "could have been checking paperwork, working on post or doing a number of things," he said.

The scene is currently being investigated by the Army's Criminal Investigation Division. The victim and shooter's ranks were not disclosed, and the victim's name can't be released until 24 hours after notification of family. Chadwick did not have the suspect's name. Investigators have not identified the shooter's motive, Chadwick said.
