Washington (CNN) -- Workers at Arlington National Cemetery have removed gravestones that were lying in a riverbed, possibly for years, until discovered by a Washington Post reporter this week.

The discovery is further embarrassment for the nation's most prominent cemetery for veterans, which last week was revealed to have misidentified or mislabeled more than 200 veterans' graves.

A spokeswoman Arlington said at least one of the gravestones had a name on it and the cemetery staff is trying to identify and contact the family of the affected veteran.
