(CNN) -- Real Madrid are poised to sign German World Cup star Sami Khedira from Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart.

The 23-year-old became hot property after his superb performances in South Africa and Stuttgart confirmed Friday that they had agreed terms with the Spanish giants.

The deal will go through once Khedira has completed a medical in the Spanish capital.

"A true leader and a player who identifies with the club such as Sami Khedira is one that you naturally don't want to let go," Stuttgart director of sport Fredi Bobic was quoted in a statement on their official website.

"But, on the other hand, we can perfectly understand Sami's wish to further his career at Real. We wish him lots of success for his new challenge in Madrid," he added.

He will be the second major signing for new Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho after his capture of winger Angel di Maria from Benfica.

Khedira, who had been linked with a move to English Premier League champions Chelsea, has won 12 caps for Germany after making his debut less than a year ago.

He seized his chance after German captain Michael Ballack was ruled out of the World Cup through injury and formed a superb partnership in central midfield with Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Khedira scored his first goal for his country in the third-place playoff win over Uruguay.

Stuttgart's statement said details of the fee remained secret, but reports have suggested he will move for around $18 million.
