(CNN) -- The University of Connecticut women's team lost to Stanford 71 to 59 on Thursday night, ending its record-setting run for consecutive college basketball wins at 90.

The Huskies, a perennial NCAA basketball powerhouse, beat Florida State 93-62 on December 21 to win their 89th straight game, eclipsing the previous benchmark of 88 set by UCLA's men's basketball team. The record had stood since 1974.

UCLA's winning streak was set under legendary coach John Wooden, who died in June at age 99. Wooden's grandson, Greg Wooden, told sports network ESPN this month that the coach would have been "absolutely thrilled" by a women's team breaking his record.

"He thought the best basketball was played at the college level, and it wasn't by the men," Wooden said.

The Huskies last lost in April 2008, when Stanford knocked them out of the NCAA tournament. UConn has won two NCAA women's titles since then and is currently the nation's top-ranked team.
