(CNN) -- English Premier League team Arsenal's manager Arsene Wenger has said that captain Cesc Fabregas has a 40 per cent chance of playing against Barcelona in their European Champions League quarter-final first leg in London on Wednesday night.

The Frenchman may leave it as late as the warm-up to make a decision on whether the 22-year-old Spain midfielder will play against the 2009 winners.

Fabregas suffered severe bruising to his leg during Arsenal's 1-1 away draw at Birmingham City in the Premier League on Saturday, and is a serious doubt to play against his former club.

"He didn't appear in training because at the moment he is not fit to play," said Wenger.

"We will give ourselves 24 hours more and we will assess the situation tomorrow. I would say it is 60 against, 40 for him playing."

Fabregas was a member of the Barcelona youth team before leaving to join Arsenal in as a 16-year-old in 2003.
