Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- The highlight of the BET Awards on Sunday was an emotional tribute to Michael Jackson that ended with embattled singer Chris Brown breaking down in tears.
Brown donned the signature Jackson glove and fedora as he moonwalked to the late singer's hit songs such as "Billie Jean" and "Smooth Criminal."
During his last performance, he paused on stage and wept as he sang "Man in the Mirror."
"I've been a victim of a selfish kind of love ... I'm starting with the Man In The Mirror/ I'm asking him to change his ways," his voice cracked as he sang into the microphone, at one point getting down on his knees.
The crowd applauded the pop star, a comeback moment for Brown. He pleaded guilty to felony assault last year for beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna. A plea deal kept him out of jail, but he was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community labor.
Other big names, including Kanye West and T.I., performed at the Shrine Auditorium ceremony in Los Angeles, California.
