Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- The actors who play detectives on NBC's "Law and Order: Los Angeles" watched real cops do their jobs during a location shoot for the show Wednesday, a series spokeswoman said.

Police were called to the scene after a camera operator noticed a handgun, that was not a prop, sitting on a rock at their Culver City, California shoot, spokeswoman Pam Golum said.

The gun was taken by investigators for tests to see if it is linked to any crimes, she said.

The actors were shooting in Ballona Creek, a concrete channel that flows through Culver City to the Pacific Ocean.
