( -- From the very beginning of last night's MTV Movie Awards pre-show -- when the super-tanned, sparkle-encrusted female half of the "Jersey Shore" cast pulled up to the red carpet in a white stretch humvee -- it was clear that subtlety wasn't exactly in style at Los Angeles's Gibson Amphitheater. Instead, the biggest stars opted for bright colors, sequins, super-short skirts, and spectacle... and we couldn't take our eyes off of them. Here are our favorite spotlight stealers from the show.

The Solo Acts

On a night devoted to celebrating the stars of the silver screen, singers Christina Aguilera and Katy Perry helped remind the audience that the M in MTV stands for music, not movies -- each wearing two distinct but equally "look-at-me" outfits. The former opted for a truly over-the-top mélange of rhinestone-studded chains and seemingly iridescent fringe courtesy of Atelier Versace, then changed into black leather fingerless gloves and a sparkling one-piece to perform a medley of her new songs. The latter wore a blue Bettie Page wig and a see-through, long-sleeve tulle minidress embellished with pewter and silver crystals by the Beirut-based designer Zuhair Murad, before changing into a shining version of the "daisy dukes, bikinis on top" look promised in the lyrics of her hit single "California Gurls."

Summer's hottest shoes

The Chic Newcomers

Teenage Nickelodeon stars Victoria Justice ("Victorious") and Miranda Cosgrove ("iCarly") both chose short, brightly-colored dresses with nude, leg-lengthening heels: We thought Victoria's bubblegum-pink BCBG Max Azria dress looked sweet, while Miranda's tomato-red Versus Versace number was fun, age-appropriate and downright chic. (Lucy Hale, the star of the forthcoming ABC Family series "Pretty Little Liars," apparently didn't get the memo about going day-glo, but she looked good nevertheless.)

The Sexy Shoes

Anna Kendrick, who won the Breakout Award for her performance in "Up In The Air" (prompting her to exclaim, "I am not cool enough to win an MTV movie award"), opted to pair statement sandals (Gianvito Rossi organza ankle-straps) with an almost equally bold Zac Posen dress. Jessica Alba, there to present Best Male Performance, followed suit. But our favorite shoes were the thigh-high silver boots that former fly girl Jennifer Lopez wore while dancing with Tom Cruise (in character as Les Grossman, the obnoxious movie producer he played in 2008's "Tropic Thunder").

Sandra Bullock's transformation

The Cute Couples

"High School Musical" sweethearts Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens (in a white, flowing minidress by Jenny Packham) seemed slightly flummoxed when MTV's so-called "kiss cam" was trained on them during the show; fellow co-stars-turned real-life-couple Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were equally awkward, although they played their own reluctance to smooch in public for laughs while accepting the "Best Kiss" award (for their performance in "The Twilight Saga: New Moon"). Robert Pattinson's famously unkempt hair was also used for a joke or two early in the show, when he was warned not to wash it by Tom Cruise (again in character as Les Grossman). But he looked almost clean-cut last night, and Kristen's pumped-up ponytail was a great, girlish counterpoint to her tweed-and-brocade Dolce and Gabbana dress.

The Best Dressed

Of course, quite a few of the show's biggest stars showed up looking simply stunning, even if their dresses were far shorter than their usual award show fare. Amanda Seyfried, who won the award for "Best Scared-As-S**t Performance" (for "Jennifer's Body"), chose a daring Stella McCartney mini bedecked with black lace insets. Jessica Biel looked borderline demure in a pink, white, and black ensemble by Giambattista Valli. And Scarlett Johansson, who came to lock lips with "Generation" award winner Sandra Bullock, was drop-dead gorgeous in a green lace Dolce & Gabbana dress. But it was Sandy who had our hearts: For her first television appearance since she was beset by scandal, she looked drop-dead gorgeous in an Oday Shakar shining black minidress boasting a rear view so low-cut that presenter Betty White joked, "Honey, don't ever wear that dress backwards."
