New York (CNN) -- Arthur Penn, who directed "Bonnie and Clyde" and "The Miracle Worker," died after a long illness Tuesday night, his representative said.

Penn, who celebrated his 88th birthday on Monday, was surrounded by his family when he died, Evan Bell said.

He was nominated three times for Oscars, twice for Emmys and once for a Tony Award, according to the Internet Movie Database.
