Washington (CNN) -- U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin has been released from the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he had been recovering from surgery, his spokesman said Saturday.

The Illinois senator, the Democrats' No. 2 man in the Senate, was discharged from the hospital Friday night after undergoing surgery the day before to remove a small, potentially cancerous tumor from his stomach, spokesman Joe Shoemaker told CNN.

The senators expected to "resume a light schedule in a few days and a full schedule next week," Shoemaker said.

His office has said the problem was discovered during a routine check-in a few weeks ago.
