(CNN) -- Police, who were searching for a missing person, found four bodies near a beach in Long Island, New York.

The bodies could have been in the area for as long as a month, police said.

Officers were searching for Shannon Gilbert, a 24-year-old New Jersey woman who was reported missing, the Suffolk County Police Department said.

The bodies were strewn around about a quarter-mile stretch of Oak Beach, police said.

The first body was found Saturday and three more bodies were found on Monday.

Police are not releasing the identities of the bodies or whether one of them was the missing woman they were searching for.

The bodies were found in a brush area near the beach and showed signs of decay that led investigators to believe that they could've been there for a month, CNN affiliate WABC reports.
