(CNN) -- A Baltimore, Maryland, police officer was undergoing emergency surgery Saturday after he was shot as he "approached a man for questioning," the city police department said.
The incident took place just after 2 a.m. Saturday in the city's downtown area.
"Initially, officers were responding to a call for a possible armed person. As one of the officers approached a man for questioning, the man immediately withdrew a weapon and opened fire. Back up units were able to return fire, wounding the gunman," the police department said in a statement.
"The suspect then fled the location in a vehicle and was later found at Mercy Hospital seeking treatment for his injuries."
The officer, who was not identified, was shot in the upper chest-shoulder area and was rushed to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
