(CNN) -- A 14-year-old was shot three times on the grounds of an elementary school in southern California, and authorities suspect a gang link to the shooting.

The boy was approached by a male on the grounds of Topaz Elementary School in Fullerton, said Sgt. Andrew Goodrich of the Fullerton Police Department. The shooting Saturday night was in Orange County, just outside of Los Angeles County.

"The victim has three bullets inside of him, but it appears the wounds are not life threatening, though that could change," Goodrich said.

Police did not have a detailed description of the shooter.

The school was closed at the time of the shooting.

Police said they did not immediately know of a motive, but Goodrich said a gang unit is investigating.

"We believe it was a gang-related shooting," he said.
