(CNN) -- Classes were cancelled Monday at Mid-Atlantic Christian University in eastern North Carolina after a student was shot and killed on campus, according to a statement from the school.
"We are shocked and saddened that this incident occurred on our campus," the statement said. "Local ministers and counselors will be available to the university family during this difficult time."
University officials say they believe the shooting was the result of a personal matter between two students. The gunman turned himself into police after the shooting, and is reportedly cooperating with the investigation, according to school officials.
The university has not released the name of the students involved in the shooting.
