Washington (CNN) -- One person is dead and another injured following a shooting incident at a funeral in Washington on Tuesday, authorities said.
Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters shots were fired at the conclusion of a funeral on U Street for a homicide victim.
People, presumably participants, walked from the funeral a few blocks to get into a car and join the procession, she said. Police believe suspects then approached them and opened fire.
The car drove off, but was involved in a serious accident and overturned just a few blocks away, said Lanier.
One person is dead and another is being treated for a gunshot wound, the police chief said, adding she does not know the cause of death.
Lanier told reporters the shooting may have been gang related and that authorities are looking for suspects.
"It's still very early on, so I don't have a lot of answers," she said.
