(CNN) -- A man in Kansas City, Kansas, hijacked a public transit bus Friday, police said.

The man hijacked the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority vehicle at a bus stop Friday morning, forcing out the driver and driving away with no one else on board, police said.

Police pursued the bus for about half an hour before taking a man into custody, they said. Officers apprehended the suspect after the bus crashed and became fully engulfed in flames, the Kansas City Star reported.

The driver was not injured. CNN affiliate KSHB said about half a dozen passengers who were on board got off before the man drove away.
