(CNN) -- Two blocks of Chicago, Illinois, were shut down early Wednesday morning and a subway line redirected after a suspicious item was found on a street near a metro station, police said.

The suspicious item turned out to be a suitcase that did not contain any explosives or dangerous material, a Chicago Police spokesman said.

The suspicious package was reported at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday (11:15 p.m. ET).

A bomb squad detonated the suitcase at 1:10 a.m. (2:10 a.m. ET) and the scene was cleared shortly after that, police said.
