Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Two young sisters in Littlerock, California, were stabbed Tuesday, leaving one dead and the other critically injured, police said.
"The suspect is actually a juvenile," Lt. Ben Nelson of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office told CNN affiliate KCAL. "There may be some family connection."
CNN affiliate KTLA identified the suspect as a 16-year-old boy.
Deputies found the suspect -- and the knife believed to have been used in the attacks -- in a nearby yard. He was arrested without incident, the sheriff's office said.
Neighbor Curtis Hallenbeck told KCAL that he first heard a girl -- believed to be the victims' cousin -- running down the street, hysterically screaming for help shortly before 8 a.m. (11 a.m. ET).
"We immediately called 911," Hallenbeck said. "I followed her to the house she was staying at where I found ... one of her cousin's on the ground with knife wounds to her neck and leg."
A 14-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital where she was in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office. Her 11-year-old sister was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff's office did not identify the victims.
