(CNN) -- Four people were arrested and charged with hate crime offenses in New York after a Mexican immigrant was beaten with a baseball bat, a metal chain and wooden planks, police said.

The victim, 26-year-old Rodulfo Olmedo, was heading home Monday morning after leaving a club in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Staten Island when he was jumped by four men, according to the New York City Police Department.

Olmedo told CNN affiliate WABC that the beating was brutal and savage and that he feared for his life. He was hit on the head. His face was swollen, and his arms bore bruises.

Video surveillance from a nearby store shows the men approaching Olmedo from behind, carrying baseball bats, two-by-four planks and a metal chain. The attack is not on the video, but soon after, the attackers are seen running across the street with bloodied bats.

Olmedo remains in stable condition at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island.

The suspects are Rolston Hopson, William Marcano and Tyrone Goodman -- all 17 -- and a juvenile whose name is not being released, police said.

They face charges including assault as a hate crime, robbery as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime, police said.

"We believe at this time that they selected this victim either in whole or in substantial part because he was a Mexican," Richmond County District Attorney Daniel Donovan told WABC.
