(CNN) -- A tropical storm watch was issued Thursday for the North Carolina coast as Tropical Storm Danny slowly approached, the National Hurricane Center said.

Tropical Storm Danny is expected to head north Friday and Saturday.

Tropical Storm Danny is expected to head north Friday and Saturday.

The watch was in effect from Cape Lookout, North Carolina, northward to Duck, and includes Pamlico Sound and Albemarle Sound, forecasters said. A tropical storm watch means tropical storm conditions, including winds of at least 39 mph, are possible within 36 hours.

"Interests elsewhere from the Carolinas northward to New England and the Canadian maritimes should monitor the progress of Danny," the hurricane center said. "Additional watches and warnings may be required for portions of this area later tonight and Friday."

As of 11 p.m. ET, Danny was "disorganized," forecasters said, with maximum sustained winds of near 45 mph. Its center was about 485 miles (780 kilometers) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Some slow strengthening was possible over the next day, forecasters said.

"Large swells from Danny are expected to produce dangerous surf conditions and life-threatening rip currents along the U.S. East Coast during the next day or two," the hurricane center said.

Danny was moving north-northwest at near 8 mph (13 kph), and is expected to continue northward and accelerate on Friday, the hurricane center said. See the storm's projected path »

Tropical storm-force winds extended 205 miles (335 kilometers) from Danny's center, mainly to the northeast.

Tracking maps showed Danny brushing North Carolina's coast late Friday and early Saturday before nearing New England later in the day.
