Gaza City, Gaza (CNN) -- A Palestinian farmer was killed in a cross-border exchange of gunfire between Gaza-based gunmen and Israeli forces, according to medical officials in Gaza.

The incident took place Saturday in the central Gaza strip.

A group of Israeli soldiers operating near the Gaza border came under fire by gunmen on the Gaza side of the border, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

The soldiers returned fire, but they could not determine whether anyone was hit, according to the spokeswoman.

It is the latest incident of violence in the Gaza strip since both sides announced a cease-fire in January.

Israel announced a cease-fire and pulled its troops out of Gaza in January, ending a three-week military campaign that the Israeli military said was aimed at halting the rocket fire by Palestinian militants.

Hamas also announced a cease-fire at that time.
