BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Two people were injured Sunday when a mortar round landed near the U.S. embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone.

One of the victims, a Peruvian security guard, was in critical condition, the Iraqi Interior Ministry said. An Iraqi woman was also injured, but there is no word on the extent of her injuries.

A car was also damaged, officials said.

The attack occurred at 5:40 a.m. local time (10:40 p.m. Saturday ET), the Interior Ministry said.

The Green Zone is a heavily protected area that houses diplomatic and government offices.
