BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A security guard for a provincial police chief was killed Saturday in a suicide bombing in western Iraq, state-run media reported.
Tariq al-Asal, the police chief in Anbar province, was leaving Ramadi University when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives near al-Asal's vehicle, an Interior Ministry official told CNN.
The number of casualties was not immediately available from the official, but state-run al-Iraqia TV reported that a member of al-Asal's personal security detail was killed and two others were wounded. Al-Asal had minor injuries, the ministry official said.
Ramadi, about 112 km (70 miles) west of Baghdad, is the capital of Anbar province. Once a Sunni insurgent stronghold, Anbar was the scene of some of the fiercest battles of the Iraq war. In the past two years Anbar was pacified as Sunni fighters turned their backs on al Qaeda.
Despite the dramatic drop in violence, high-profile attacks have occurred in recent months. In May, three Americans, including a senior State Department official, were killed in a roadside bombing.
