BERLIN, Germany (CNN) -- Twenty-four people were injured when a regional express train crashed into a freight train outside Berlin, a spokesman for the German rail authority said Friday.

The accident happened at 10:18 p.m. (4:18 p.m. ET) Thursday in the Karow area outside the German capital, the spokesman for Deutsche Bahn said.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the crash, he said.

The train driver was among the injured, the spokesman said. Five people were seriously hurt, though none of their injuries was life-threatening, he said.

The freight train had 24 cars and was carrying propane, a flammable liquid, but none leaked, the spokesman said.

Officials have closed the train line while the tracks are repaired, he said.
