(CNN) -- A Greek police officer shot a private security guard on the grounds of the U.S. embassy in Athens, Greece, on Wednesday, seriously wounding him, local police said.
The security guard, a 31-year-old man employed by Brinks Hellas Security Services, was shot in the neck outside the residence of U.S. Ambassador to Greece Daniel Speckhard. The residence is adjacent to the U.S. embassy building.
The security guard was transferred to a local hospital, where he is in critical condition, police said.
A spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Athens confirmed the shooting, which police said occurred shortly before noon.
The police officer, 38, was arrested, police said. Both had been guarding Speckhard's home, police said. They did not provide further details on the circumstances of the shooting.
