MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A suspected Colombian drug boss was shot dead Thursday in a hospital in Madrid, CNN sister station CNN+ reported, citing police sources.

The sources said the incident occurred just before 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET), when at least one person entered into the victim's hospital room in the 12 de Octubre Hospital in Madrid and shot him at least four times in bed.

Hospital sources told CNN+ that the man had been admitted under the name of Leonidas Vargas Vargas, the leader of the Colombian Caqueta cartel, who had been considered a key narcotrafficker prior to his arrest by Spanish police in 2006.

Police were not confirming his identity.
