(CNN) -- Five miners were dead and six others missing after a gas explosion at a coal mine in southwestern China early Monday, state-run media reported.
The miners were working at the Malishu Coal Mine in southwestern China's Yunnan province when the accident happened around 2 a.m., a county government official told the Xinhua news agency.
Recovery efforts are underway at the mine and provincial work safety authorities are investigating the cause of the blast, Xinhua reported.
Mine accidents are common in China. Last year, 3,200 people were killed in such accidents, state media said.
