Srinagar, Indian-controlled Kashmir -- A police officer was killed and another wounded critically when militants fired at them while they were on duty in the capital, Srinagar, Sunday, authorities said.
The militants fired at the officers with pistols at close range and fled away in the confusion that ensued, said Farooq Ahmad, inspector general of police in Kashmir.
The brazen afternoon attack comes days after the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Kashmir and urged the separatists and neighboring Pakistan "to sort out problems" in Kashmir.
"Terrorism has to end for productive talks," Singh said.
