Bus fire kills 24 in southwestern China

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A commuter bus caught fire during the Friday morning rush hour in the southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu, killing at least 24 people, state-run media reported.

The No. 9 bus burst into flames about 8:30 am. (8:30 p.m. Thursday) near the city zoo in the north of the city, sending heavy black smoke into the sky.

An undetermined number of people were injured in the fire, Xinhua news agency cited the provincial work safety supervision bureau as saying. At least 10 people escaped unharmed.
