(CNN) -- A killer gunman at the center of a two-day standoff with police has been found dead inside his home, New Zealand police said Saturday.

Police said they believe the gunman is Jan Molenaar, 51. Local media described him as a former army reservist.

Police found explosives inside the house and said it may take up to two days for a special bomb squad to clear them. A police cordon remains in place in the neighborhood, keeping some residents out of their homes.

"There is still a risk to residents who live near the ... house where the incident occurred," police said.

The standoff began Thursday morning in Napier, about 200 miles southeast of Auckland, when police arrived for a "standard cannabis raid." Police did not say what prompted the situation.

The gunman was firing shots from the house and killed Senior Constable Len Snee. He also wounded two other police officers and a civilian, police said.

Police said they were still unable to say how or when the gunman died, or what injuries he sustained. Police were also unable to describe the weapons they found inside the house.

"These will be long and complicated investigations," Superintendent Sam Hoyle said in a statement. "We appreciate that people want answers quickly about what happened and why. The reality is that the investigation team must be given time to do a thorough job."

Snee's wife and sons released a statement saying they were "struggling to come to terms with what has happened," police said.

"We are grieving the loss of a wonderful husband, father and brother. Len loved his family and he loved his job."
