NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Twenty-two people were killed and 58 others injured in a fireworks factory fire in western India, police said Saturday.

The blaze occurred Friday at a firecracker unit near a village in Maharashtra state's Jalgaon district, district police chief Santosh Rastogi told CNN.

Most of the bodies pulled from the gutted factory were burned beyond recognition, he said.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the fire, Rastogi added.

Indians celebrate their biggest Hindu festival, Diwali, with massive fireworks. The event usually falls in October or November.
