KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A suicide bomber killed eight people in an attack on a police patrol unit Thursday morning in southern Afghanistan, officials say.
Four officers and four civilians were killed. The bomber also injured 17 others, including officers and civilians, said Kamal Uddin, the deputy provincial police chief.
The attack in Lahkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, occurred as the counternarcotics unit was on its way to a mission, according to Uddin.
The counternarcotics team, a major player in the fight against the booming drug trade in the area, burned billions of dollars' worth of confiscated drugs in February. The region currently provides about two-thirds of the world's opium and heroin.
