NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- A bus carrying mostly Hindu pilgrims fell into a gorge in southern India Tuesday, killing twelve and injuring 41 people, authorities said.

The wreck occurred in the Kottayam district of Kerala, the state's additional district magistrate E.P. Rajan told CNN.

Among those dead were 10 women, he said.

The bus was headed for a Hindu temple when it fell 20 feet down from a bridge, he added.

Officials could not immediately say what caused the crash.
