NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- India's former prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, hospitalized with a respiratory infection, was put on a ventilator Friday, doctors said.
D.K. Sharma, medical superintendent of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), told CNN that the move followed the worsening of a lower respiratory-tract infection.
"But his basic parameters, like the kidneys, heart and the liver are stable. He's been monitored regularly," Sharma said. Vajpayee, 84, was hospitalized at AIIMS on Wednesday, he added.
