(CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck near the coast of northern Peru on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake, which struck at 12:35 p.m. (1:35 p.m. ET), was centered 54 miles (87 km) west-southwest of Piura, Peru, and 423 miles (680 km) south-southwest of the capital city of Quito, the agency said.
It was 9 miles (15 km) deep.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
