(CNN) -- A Brazilian man stole a single-engine plane and crashed it into the parking lot of a shopping mall, killing himself and his 5-year-old son, Goiania police said Friday.

Kleber Barbosa da Silva pushed the pilot out of a rented plane just before takeoff and later slammed it into several cars parked at a shopping mall in Goiania, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, said Chief Executive Officer Jorge Moreira.

Police Officer Sergio Katayama, who communicated with Barbosa just prior to the crash, said the man seemed distressed.

"When I told him we could help him, he said, 'I am going to do something even worse than I already did,'" Katayama said. Video Watch footage of crash scene »
