(CNN) -- Protesters set stores ablaze in downtown Fort-de-France, Martinique, as they battled hundreds of police officers in the latest round of demonstrations over low wages, a police officer told CNN.

Police on the French Caribbean island managed to disperse the protesters by late Friday evening, he added.

The officer declined to provide his name, citing police protocol.
