(CNN) -- Thirty-two people were killed and 25 others injured when a bus skidded off a rain-slicked mountain road and tumbled into a ravine in northern Peru early Saturday, a transit police spokesman told CNN.
The bus was traveling in poor weather in the country's Cajamarca region when the crash occurred, said police spokesman Mario Machado.
A high frequency of road accidents in Peru prompted the government to launch a safety initiative in 2006 meant to improve road quality and reduce the number of transit-related fatalities.
Police would not comment on the conditions of those injured in Saturday's incident.
