As pools reopen for the Memorial Day weekend, safety experts urge parents to protect their children as nearly 300 young kids die in pools and spas every year, according a consumer safety report.
An additional 3,000 children younger than 5 suffer serious injuries in pools and spas every year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's new 14-page report.
"I call upon all parents, caregivers, and pool and spa operators to ensure that fencing and other layers of protection are in place; that there is constant supervision of children in and around the water; and that new, safer drain covers that prevent entrapment incidents are installed," said Nancy Nord, acting chairman of the product safety commission.
