United had strong appeals for a penalty turned down as Darren Fletcher was tripped and hit the post through Federico Macheda.
Igor Akinfeev also twice made point blank saves from Rooney but the pressure inevitably told.

"They were fantastic our players, the chances we made, the intensity of our play in the last 20 minuites was terrific," he told Sky Sports.
