(CNN) -- Rangers squandered a chance to go back to the top of the Scottish Premier League table, despite a late goal from Spanish striker Nacho Novo giving them a 1-1 draw at Hibernian on Wednesday.
Celtic, who lost 1-0 to Rangers in the Glasgow derby at the weekend, beat Dundee United 2-1 on Tuesday to go two points clear at the top ahead of their rivals' fixture.
But Walter Smith's side failed to capitalize and Celtic remain on top of the table on goal difference, although they only have two goals in hand with two matches still remaining.
Former Celtic striker Derek Riordan had given the home side the lead four minutes before the interval after firing home a pass from fellow-forward Steven Fletcher.
Rangers thought they had levelled in the 70th minute when substitute Novo claimed he bundled the ball over the line, but no goal was given.
However, Rangers did manage to haul themselves back into the game with 11 minutes to go when a Majid Bougherra cross was fumbled by goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay and Novo forced the ball over the line.
