(CNN) -- Schalke have thrown their hat into the ring in the most open Bundesliga title race in many years, as a first-half goal from Jermaine Jones proved enough to beat Cologne 1-0 on Friday and lift the Blues up to sixth position in the table.

The victory, Schalke's third in five matches, has moved the club onto 37 points, just six points behind current leaders Hertha Berlin -- who are a point ahead of second-placed Hamburg ahead of the weekend's matches.
The only goal came in the 28th minute when Ivan Rakitic laid the ball off for Jones, who blasted into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
However, Cologne were unlucky not to claim at least a point from the match.
Just after the hour mark, Youssef Mohamad missed a great chance to equalize when he shot inches wide.
Then, in the final minute, the same player forced Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into making a fine save.
