(CNN) -- AC Milan consolidated third position in the Serie A table as a goal from Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf proved enough to give them a 1-0 victory over Cagliari on Sunday.
Clarence Seedorf celebrates scoring the only goal as Milan beat Cagliari 1-0 on Sunday.
Milan went into the game on the back of two tough fixtures against city rivals Inter last Sunday and Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup -- and thought they had taken a 22nd-minute lead when Filippo Inzaghi found the net from Seedorf's pass, but the veteran striker had just strayed offside.
However, they did go ahead in the 55th minute when a mix-up between defender Diego Lopez and goalkeeper Federico Marchetti handed Seedorf a simple chance to break the deadlock.
The result means Milan have narrowed the gap between themselves and table- topping Inter to 11 points, with second-placed Juventus just two points ahead of them.
Fiorentina moved back up to fourth place after a last-gasp winner from Adrian Mutu gave them a 2-1 home victory over Chievo.
Santiago Morero gave the visitors an early lead but Alberto Gilardino levelled in the 73rd minute before Mutu struck four minutes into injury time to secure the three points.
Genoa moved above Roma into fifth place with a 1-0 success at Napoli courtesy of Bosko Jankovic's second-half strike.
