(CNN) -- Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven have confirmed the resignation of coach Huub Stevens on their official Web site.
A statement on www.psv.nl said: "Huub Stevens has offered the PSV board his resignation as coach. He feels that a real "click" is missing between himself and the players in spite of great effort and many attempts to improve the situation.
"The board regrets, but respects his decision. They have done everything within their power to support the coach and prevent this situation from happening."
Stevens left Bundesliga side Hamburg at the end of last season and signed a two-year contract at the Philips Stadion.
However, the 55-year-old has endured a torrid time, with the club trailing in fifth place in the table -- 15 points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar -- and eliminated from both the Champions League and Dutch Cup.
The final straw appears to have been Saturday's 2-2 draw with NAC Breda. with saw Stevens and the team jeeered off the pitch by frustrated supporters.
