(CNN) -- Local favorite Sergio Garcia and Scotland's David Drysdale share the lead after the second round of the Madrid Masters at Centro Nacional.

Sergio Garcia shares the lead in Madrid after carding a second round five-under-par 67.

Sergio Garcia shares the lead in Madrid after carding a second round five-under-par 67.

Garcia added a five-under-par 67 to his opening 64 as he bids for his maiden win of the year in first event in Europe since July's British Open.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old Drysdale, who made his 10th trip to the Tour qualifying school last November, but is as high as 50th on this year's money list, finished with an eagle to card a seven-under-par 65.

The pair are on 131 (-13), one stroke ahead of a group of three players, Gary Murphy of Ireland, Englishman Ross McGowan and Italian Emanuele Canonica.

In fact, McGowan would have led but four-putted the 16th hole for a double bogey six and finished with a 66.

Former Tour winner Canonica is only 262nd on the "Race to Dubai" standings and no longer in the world's top 1,000, but he was at The Masters in April -- as caddie for Jose Maria Olazabal.

Spanish veteran Olazabal also eagled the 18th to make the cut on the limit of four-under, as did Luke Donald.

Olazabal's 65 was a 10-stroke improvement on his first round, but playing partner Darren Clarke went in the other direction.

Five-under and leading midway through his first round, Clarke crashed out on one-over after a 76.

First round leader Manuel Quiros not surprisingly found it hard to follow-p his "unbelievable" opening 62. That had put him two in front of Garcia, but the world number 1,076 dropped to 10th position with a 73, four strokes off the pace.
